Many threads say these fish eat anything, but mine spit out / don't go for cubed apple and zuchinni. They attack the floating omega one cichlid pellets i have been feeding them. How unhealthy are cichlid pellets for them? The pellets seem to keep my tank pretty clean of waste since they float and dont break down and fowl the water. How long would i need to fast them to get them to eat apples? Zuchinni?

Try carrots, broccoli, squash, cucumbers, etc. Try different things. Don't starve them. They're not all gonna like the same thing. Cichlid pellets are very nutritious. They are fine as part of a varied diet. Mine go nuts for carrots. They don't have to be bite sized, either. They have no problem biting off pieces.

Cichlid pellets are fine for them. I've been feeding mine mostly Hikari Cichlid Gold and krill for its entire life, and it is very healthy (and it's about 24" long at about 15 months old).

Cool dude! Glad to hear pellets are safe, i was starting to think i might be feeding them the equivalent of living off mcdonalds. My two are about 7 inches i got them at september and they were 2.5 inches. They've eaten cichlid pellets exclusively but i am trying to vary it a bit. Sometimes its hard to tell with my guys cause they are in a liner pond (plywood tank?) and really hard to see. Gotta scrounge some money and make them a nice tank so they arent just fish shaped silhouettes

It's fine to feed them mostly cichlid pellets, as a staple. I noticed too that once they get a taste for meaty foods (including pellets for fish that are mostly carnivores), they refuse to eat vegetables. Mine will turn up her nose at carrots, and basically everything else that is plant except for pineapples and bananas. I think it's the sweet flavor she likes.

Mine doesn't. I give it cucumber, melon, and whatever else I have at the moment and it eats it all, and it loves grapes. The only thing I've tried that it wouldn't eat was lettuce (I don't think it's into leafy foods).

I've never tried bananas......

Yep, it ate that, too, although it kind of made a mess out of my water.

I used to feed my plecos alge discs with spiralina. When i bought my pacus they used to grab the discs before they hit the bottom and spin them in their mouths trying to eat them. It is hillarious to watch you should try it. :]
