Paratilapia polleni

These are "old world " cichlids yet IMO It is neither African or American, these cichlids are from Madagascar, and island's evolutionary tract seems to have most recently broken off India.
And my be why the Indian genus Etroplus, and Madagascan Paretroplus share close ancestry.

Paretroplus kieneri

Both Paretroplus and Etroplus share an entirely different organ for hearing, than all other cichlids.

There is a program called Rise of the Continents Eurasia that explains this, very worth watching

Never mind, duane's response, as usual, was far better. Althogh paratilapia do resemble their tilapia counterparts superficially. I've always pondered the idea that Madagascar may have two separates lineages, when it comes to its endemic cichlids. Especially, considering many tilapian fish species have an extremely high tolerance for seawater.

Either Africa or India are probably appropriate considering all were once part of the super continent Gondwana at some point, then Madagascar and India both breaking off of Africa as 1 chunk, but then Madagascar breaking off India and doubling back toward Africa.
Probably why the distinct African Tilapine lineage, and the separate Asian Paretroline/Etropline lineages, give to take a few million years.
