PERENTIE LIZARD ( Varanus giganteus )

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Even then, I don't think these monitors are considered venomous on the same level as snakes. Snakes are born with the ability to produce venom, whereas Komodos (and other monitors) only acquire this toxic bacteria after a period of time feeding on carrion. The lizards aren't born with it.

I'm not a chemist or a biologist, so I don't know the mechanics of a venom versus the aforementioned bacteria. (shrugs)

Venomous = affects the body through the bloodstream.
Poisonous = affects the body through absorption. I E mucus membranes, skin, etc.
So, I was wrong.

They will NEVER be seen for sale, which is good. And yes, the Perenty is the largest goanna in Australia and 3rd largest in the world.

I'm always up for some thread necrotizing.......

They have been offered in the Private community, and I believe they all ended up in Japan........$30,000 each.........

Frank Retes still has a Female that's alive and kicking, last I heard.......Many attempts have been made to utilize those genetics, but the AZA has effectively put a stop to it........

there's a guy on youtube, crocdoc2 who keeps and breeds both the lace, and perentie..he is in in AUS though.

Sarco, the more accurate term is venomous, since the toxins are injected into the bloodstream. A poison is technically absorbed, either by ingestion or thru the skin (Ex. poison dart frogs or puffer fish).

I don't know if the perenties have that same toxic bacteria in their saliva like Komodos, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Your terminology is a bit off. They don't inject venom. It is passively deployed by the act of biting. All varanids have primitive venom glands in the lower jaw. Pressure from biting causes venom to be released into the saliva where it gets into the wounds of the animal being bitten. Bacteria isn't the killer, it is secondary to the venom.

You'd be more familiar with this in the beaded lizard and gila monster. Considered close relatives by being from the group varanoides of which varanids (monitor lizards) are a part of. It would further interest you to know that snakes evolved from this venomous group of lizards which is why many of them have venomous bites as well. Even the lowly garter snake has its own primitive venom which we are only now recognizing.

Perenties are best kept in the wild or in zoos. They are among the least suitable monitors for hobbyists (nile, croc, komodo, perentie) because of their size, level of activity and willingness to inflict grievous injury on anyone foolish enough to corner one (ie. keep it in a cage).

That said, I cannot agree with you more about how unbelievably beautiful they are.

Summed it up well. Too agro to keep but nice to look at.

but people still keep those don't they?
also, those traits may be considered desirable by many people. big pythons are often kept simply because they are so big, and an active animal is almost always more attractive in terms of viewing.

i would love one, i really like the patterns. although i dont think i would pay that much for one.. unless i could breed them:D
