Sand can destroy a filter very quickly if not taken into consideration. What kind of filter(s) do you run?
 
thats why if your going to use sand go with silica, its a lot heavier then most fall down quick and will not float. i had the same problem about 4 years ago with the art sand from LFS drove me crazy. after some heavy research and some water test i went with 16 grit silica sand white based :) looks amazing with full specturm lighting
