Pink Convict Cichlid Sexing

I recently came across a LOT of pink convict cichlids at my LFS. I already have a female black convict cichlid and I want a male pink convict so they can form a pair. How do you know whether a pink convict is a male or a female? Is it similar to black convicts where females have the orange splotch on their sides?

Yes. Males are longer and more elongated with a steeper forehead at maturity, while females stay shorter and rounder with usually orange coloration on the belly.

It can be tricky to tell them apart as juveniles before the colors and the secondary sex characteristics develop.

I found a pink convict that had orange splotches on its side but also had long trailer fins characteristic of males. Do you think it is a male or female?

Some females can have trailers as well. It's just genetics. You say orange scotches on it's side so most likely female.

I’ll admit the pink convicts coming out now I’m questioning the sex…I just bought a female that I hoped was a male, but it had orange stripes but an orange blotch…

Color is probably the better determinant than fins. I’d go for the biggest one not to have any orange, and that should be a male.

In most cases, yes.
But the thing about all the line bred morphs is a lot of the normal tellers aren’t 100%.
