Get a new pair. They weren't truly bonded. Next time give more time together before trying to spawn. Maybe like two weeks - a month depending how well they get along at first. But if you don't a instant attraction between the pair give em more time together maybe add some dithers or a mirror to give the a common enemy and get working as a team.
