Going to Breed with to Pink Convict pairs but one of the pink females paired up with my male convict common one Grey with black stripes (not sure of correct name...common convict or just convict) What can i expect to see if i let them breed? They have already found a nest site and began construction and are now guarding it. When can i expect eggs and how often do they eat their first hatch?

I did the same thing on purpose for my sons science experiment. Only mine were a Pink male with a Reg. female. They have successfully spawned and out of the 20 survivors there were 17 pink and only 3 that were reg. I say let them be and see what you can get from them. Good Luck

2 possible outcomes:

1) the striped parent carries the recessive 'pink' (golden) gene. The resulting offspring will be about 50/50. 1/2 striped and 1/2 'pink'. Though, of course, enviromental factors will also affect the actual ratios ---- not all sperm and egg are equal, and some offspring may have a better survival rate. Nonetheless, about 50/50 can be expected and is usually typical. All striped offspring will be carriers of the 'pink' recessive gene, even though they do not exhibit this color.

2) The striped parent does not carry the 'pink' recessive gene. ALL offspring will be striped. ( but all will be carriers of the 'pink' gene even though they do not exhibit this color).

Marbled is very unlikely, though not impossible. The marbled strain must have originated from a striped X 'pink' cross, though it is a very unusual result. Bred cons for over 20 years and have never seen it but there are a few others that have gotton a few marbled offspring on rare occasion, from such a cross.

Why would you breed Cons for over 20 years?

The same reason most people would keep any fish : because they like the fish. I breed convicts becaue their behavoir is fascinating and very interesting. Also, to get the next generation and choose the ones I like, usually out of ones that survive in the tank with out having to remove them as fry. If your breeding CA just to try and make a buck ---- Good luck! Man, you'd definatley be keeping the wrong kind of fish.

I'm not a flavour of the month type of guy. Had many fishes that used to be "dream" fishes and most of them proved to be much less interesting then the convict cichlid. I don't keep fishes just to look pretty either ----if it's just to look pretty, might as well hang a pretty picture on the wall instead of a tank ,and be done with it ---- a lot less trouble. I don't keep fish just to try and impress others ; I keep them for my own sake. CA fish do not impress as well to most people as rift lake cichlids do. Especially if you want to impress non-aquarists, keep rift lake cichlids. I 've had many brightly colored salvini and red terror, yet when a non-aquarist sees my fish they always point to my token few mbuna and say: "Oh, is that one ever prettty. You should keep more fish like that one"

As an aquarist of well over 35 years and breeder of many CA/SA cichlids, I couldn't disagree with you more. Though festae are one of my favorites, I can show you many CA/SA that can compete with rift lake cichlids for color and overall beauty. I've had many of my african cichlid keeping friends, shocked and amazed at colors of the CA/SA that are available. Most CA/SA cichlids exhibit the behaviour you find fascinating in convicts, but do it in such better form and with much more diversity. You might want to check out http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/default.php and educate yourself on what's actually available in CA/SA. For the most part, rift lake cichlids lack personality.

I can't disagree with that, but the fact remains, there are more people, especially non-aquarists, that will be more impressed with rift lake cichlids and the colors of these fish. And if it really were the case that most rift lake cichlid keepers prefferred the colors and beauty of CA cichlids, then there would be a lot more of them keeping CA instead. But of course WAY more people keep rift lake cichlids.

I've been quite familiar with the web site in your link for the past 3 years or so, so nothing knew to me, with this link. Been keeping CA/SA since '74, so I have had a few and bred a few. Of course everyone likes different things, otherwise we would all keep exactly the same fish. I don't understand why people waste tank space on goldfish or why a flowerhorn should be worth more then other CA cichlids --- but hey, to each there own!
