Which one has more body weight between serrasalmus rhombeus(black piranha) and pygocentrus piraya(san francisco piranha)? Which one can bite the hardest?
Welcome aboard

Great question I think both can be equal in weight but would assume the Pygocentrus Piraya may have the bite force edge over the Black Piranha.

Thanks for the quick response. What is the reason for you assuming that the pygocentrus piraya will have a stronger bite? Thoroughout the internet, the redeye piranha(serrasalmus rhombeus) has been considered to have the strongest bite among all the extant species of piranha, possesing a force of approximately 30 times its own body weight in its jaws. What explanation do you have for this?

I was going on the jaws of Piraya due to the Bulldog like structure. Now I know not to go by the head or jaw structure.

While looking at the black piranha at first, especially the juvenile ones, I also thought that it would have a weaker bite force compared to the other round headed species due to its triangular head structure, but research says that it has the strongest bite among all living piranhas. I assume they have also conducted research on san francisco piranha and found its bite force to be weaker than black piranha before confidently stating that the black piranha has the strongest bite. Of course, it can't be said simply by looking at the shape of the jaw, hyenas have more powerful bite than lions despite their pointed face compared to the lions' thicker and rounded face. And crocs also have pointed face though they possess the strongest bite on the planet, at least, measured till now.

Great examples forgot about the bone crushing Hyena.

The genus serrasalmus always seems more impressive to me than the genus pygocentrus because serrasalmus piranhas are solitary in contrast to the schooling lifestyle of the pygocentrus piranhas which implies that they are self sufficient and stronger so they don't need group protection. And also they tend to be bolder and more aggressive. And serrasalmus piranhas tend to be more carnivorous than the pygocentri which means that they are better predators. Serrasalmus piranhas have less vegetation in their diet compared to pygocentrus piranhas as far as I know. I don't know how true this is, but many people say like this. Do you have any information about this?

By the way, have you kept shrimps? Can shrimps be kept on a herbivorous diet? Will they be healthy?
