anyone please explain to me what makes these different from regular ones??? are they more viscious???, colourful??? larger??? someone wants to trade a fish with me and is offereing me those although I have no idea what they are.

Scientific Name: Pygocentrus piraya
Common Names: Piraya Piranha
Distribution: Only found in the Rio São Francisco in Brazil.
Size: 16 inches (Captive), 24 inches (Wild)
Captivity: At least 40 gallons per piraya is needed, the more gallons per fish the better. As a shoaling fish, it is recommended that they be kept in at least groups of four, although this is normally not possible due to their size. A powerful and efficient filtration system is especially needed due to their large waste. A temperature of 24-30C, and pH of 5.5-7.5 is required.
Personal Comment: This is the king of the Pyocentrus species, and arguably the king of the entire piranha species in terms of size and possible aggression. These are the least skittish of the Pyocentrus species, and certainly the biggest. However for them to reach their potential size, a large tank and excellent water quality is needed.

Rumor has it that they are going to be very hard to come by in the aquarium trade soon. Might be worth it to consider the trade

They are very hard to come by, P.Pirayas grow the largest of all pygos. You probably wont be able to find them in small sizes at all.:grinno:

by regualr i don't really know to which you are reffering,
i'm assuming pygo's, and i'm guessing you mean red's, not caribe, or the sort

larger-yes, they grow larger, in captvity, i have seen them up to 20", but that was a certain case, most of the rest i have seen aren't above 13-14"

color- yes they have brilliant color, usally, orange or yellow

and if somebody wants to trade you for piraya, take it, they are worth it, but make sure you idetify them correctly or he could be gipping you with a different pygo.

they've already said it. it is the Rio Sao Francisco Piranha, the biggest, arguably the most beautifull...aere geting scarce in the trade, lately, as far as i understand..mine is not specially mean..my caribas and natereris are worse...

I got mine for 100 bucks. He's about 9 inches long, pretty badass. My smaller Caribe are more agressive.

He's still the king of the tank. It's him, 4 bred redbellys, 2 wild caught RBs, and two wild caribe.

we also have 8 exodons in there for fun.
