Plant only filtration (why not popular in the hobby???)

Ya willows work good to, look messy. Id try that as well but its not everyday i see a willow tree with a seed to pick up. Bald cypress love wet feet to.

My willow branches always rotted, even after sprouting. I tried about seven different times. They do amazingly well for a week or two, then turn to brown mush.

Arrow plants? You make them sound impressive. Got to try that for sure! I might clear our the cabbage and some of the pothos to give it a whirl.

I'm trying to sprout three maple seeds on a wet paper towel now. Nothing yet, it's been four days. I read they need to winter so I threw some dry seeds in the fridge in anticipation.

to winter? then why do they grow in your yard in the summer if you dont mow your grass! Maybe the willows rotted because the stem was getting wet and not just the roots? the pothos sometimes I keep some stems wet, but all the other plants I have the roots are in the water and the plants are not. The plants will be fine if plant and 1" of roots are above water. I got more maple seeds today, gonna research the best way to sprout, maybe in dirt first then transplant. Saw a willow tree while driving today, but wasnt within my legal access, dang.

Anyone have any luck with avacado seed? I tried it a few times but it never rooted. I thought people used to stick toothpicks in them to place half of the seed in a cup of water and it would root in the water, but so far no luck for me.

I put the top of a pineapple in my HOB, 1st just to get it to grow roots, but after a while, I just left it there, however I can't vouch for the impact on my nitrates, Its hard for me to trust the lives of my fish to the top of a pineapple

Pineapple is a new one!

Avocado seeds sprout fine in a baggie with a damp paper towel. No reason to poke it with toothpicks. Just wasted effort and possibly increased chance of killing the seed.

I tried emergent willow branches first, and they worked for awhile. But once they grew a few inches and their roots had reached out a bit, they just kept dying. Don't know. But go for it! If it works for you, awesome!

I just visited an arboretum and found seeds under a nice red paper bark maple from last year. Definitely going to try sprouting them.

lucky me found a willow tree in the backyard of a job. Now got 2 15" peices in the water. I think I killed my mint plant by having part of the stem underwater.
