Plant only filtration (why not popular in the hobby???)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
he's a lil horizontally challenged isn't he! He ended up not being in there long.. the bottom started leaking and I had to move him to my other aquarium.

I have a small outdoor aquaponics system. It has a few rosyred/fathead minutes, some american ghost shrimp, and some ramshorn snails. besides topping it off everyonce and a while and throwing a bloodworm cube in there once every 2 weeks and the electricity, its self sufficient. Also grows plants faster than soil!

My Goonch tank is an open top 210 just filtered with sponge filters and these plants. The tank is right next to a window and the plants are outa control! I took some pics to show you guys!

Yeah, this is mint:

Similar plants work well! Seems most green, nodular vine plants do fine like this.

I've experienced that spider plants cannot compete with pothos for nutrients. They do fine alone, as the only emergent species. But all my spiders turned white and slowly died when used in systems with pothos. Only one remains in my 55g and it's looking like a zombie. You can see it right in the center, to the left of the vase/light in the first pic I posted above. Yes, it could be my tap water, or the lighting, or the brands of fish food I'm using. But why cry "zebra" when it's probably just another horse?
