Planting dwarf hairgrass in only sand?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i dont know much about hair grass, but i use this stuff called floragrow, its basicly a nitrogen supplement, and my plants are now almost too big

Most plants can get their nutrients from the WC (water column) even if they are heavy root feeders. By dosing Florish or Dry ferts or w/e your using they would get enough source to live, if you want runners and it to spread you want more then it to just live. I would suggest if you want any plant what so ever to thrive you should, Co2, Fert, and if it's a heavy root feeder a root tab wouldn't hurt.

Also the people you see with carpets, and their plants sending out runners it completely depends on how settled a plants root systems are and if they are getting all the ferts they need. Example if you just planted a new plant 2 weeks ago I wouldn't suspect any production for quite sometime depending on the plant. I believe hairgrass is very slow at spreading.

I was using pool filter sand in my tank. The hair grass really didn't take off until I added the root tabs. Once I did that, it spread like mad.

so theoretically, if i continued to supply root tabs consistently and dosed excel, the hairgrass should still be able to spread and have runners? The thing is the tank already has some shrimp in it and i would hate to put them through the stress of taking everything out and putting substrate on the bottom. Any opinions on what i should do?

If you add the root tabs and keep up with your normal ferts, you should be just fine. With PFS, once I got everything growing, it was hard to get it to stop.

Side note. Do not put the root tabs directly underneath the plant. I like to break them up and spread them about an inch or two around the plant. This will encourage the roots to spread.

o ok that makes more sense. one more question, about how deep should my sand be? should the sand be able to cover the roots of the hair grass? thank you so much for your reply.

My substrate is 3" deep in my 10g...I wouldnt recommend dosing nitrates unless you have your tank on a pretty rigorous schedule, and you are high tech. My medium tech tank couldnt handle it, even with very little in the way of stocking, and dense plants.
