playsand vs pool filter sand

oh and BTW..I can literally vacuum the sand and the PFS is so heavy it doesnt get sucked up at all.

I also have pfs and have to say that is one of the biggest benefits, settles quickly and can be vacuumed like its gravel
 
ive always used playsand,,never had any problems with it,,just the fact that you actually have to rinse it a million times before using lol!
 
Two questions about pool filter sand:

How do plants do in it? I'm not looking for a full planted tank just some simple low light plants

Is it inherently going to have algae problems and turn brown?
 
where are u guys finding the white pfs? i made a trip to lowes and home depot and the only pfs they had was a kinda off tan color. is there a brand to get?

Leslie's Pool Supply. I'd assume other pool supply stores too
 
The light tan they have at Lowes is the kind we're using. Looks white in your tank, as you're seeing in photos. Looks great, easy to maintain, no problems at all. I've been using it in my 125gallon tank for about a year and a half without issues.

Incidentally, I've also used playsand and there's no question that pool filter sand is superior.
