I just added a new pleco (royal) to my 125 planted 1 week ago. He is in there with another royal (difference in size of a inch or so). The other inhabitants are roseline sharks diamond tetras brilliant rasboras kulli loaches neons and corycats. I did a waterchange 5 hours ago (if that would matter). I just saw both plecos and one is yellow. Same color as a albino bristle nose pleco. What happened, why did my royal change color from normal royal coloration to yellow. And before somebody can ask IT IS A NORMAL NONE ALBINO ROYAL. I got it from a LFS and it looked normal. Sorry also no pictures (no phone and computer wont load pics)

They will alter color when stressed, and subtrate, if u just got him sounds normal, when I sold my 16" standard pleco he turned very pale as well. My guess stress from acclimation.

Nothing to worry about short term wise, bet when u wake up it Will be swimming the tank looking fly.

agreed this goes with mostly any other fish as well when stressed or introduced to a new setting

it says he has had them for over a week though, and he just did a water swap 5hrs ago. did you maybe forget to put water conditioners in?

no water conditioners I have well water, and water temp would be just a few degrees off. Never really see them just have them to aid in maintenance, saw him in his new yellow color and got/am scared.

I'm quite surprised that the people so far think this sort of colour change it normal. It's not. About 6 months ago one of my Panaque nigrolineatus (L190) did this and reverted to back to normal, and it still is outwardly healthy. It's not thought to be harmful to the fish and is unknown what causes it except maybe stress, but here is some discussion about on on pleco colour morphing and a German article about other morphing species

This is mine.
