I wasn't joking, I really thought they were eggs! I had no idea!

Be thankful you didn't have any egg scatterers in the tank like barbs etc. You would have wound up taking all your other fish out and still waiting to this day for something to hatch. Worse yet, you'd be delighted and amazed that the eggs were still fungus free.
