So yesterday was an odd day, for me. Woke up in the morning and everything in my 20 gallon community tank was doing fine and looked fine. When I got home yesterday night my pleco (just a normal pleco nothing fancy) was pure white and dead (will post pic below). Didn't look like ick (white spot disease) but regardless turned the heat up from 85-89 over a few hour period through the night. When I woke up this morning my dawrf grami that I've had over a year was laying on the bottom not looking to well but with no signs of a fungus issue. Please let me know what you guys think, really need to get a handle on this today was going to do a 75% water change when I get off of work.

Im not 100% sure but looks a little like your fish is cooked??? Have you got an actual thermometer in there to test for temp?? Also curious why you’d set your tank temps so high to begin with???

Finally, since you mentioned its a community tank, what else is in there besides the pleco / dwarf gourami and what are your water change schedules like...

Im asking mainly to try and work out what else could have gone wrong...

Yes. Turn the temps down to 78. Add a pump or wavemake to get the water moving. Could be anything that’s kille sur pleco.

Hey everyone just got off work. When I set the tank up almost 2 years ago I'd get ick (white spot disease) a lot pretty often, someone suggested raising the temp might help so brought it up to 85, the water has been this temp for the last year and a 1/2. Havnt had an issue with ick since. I do water changes once a month I was in the process of changing it to a planted aquarium tho, so for the last month I've only been using filter floss. I did have a power outage a few night ago tho and all the tanks went down for an hour. I wonder if maybe the heater is putting out more heat than it says, I can stick an aquarium thermometer in it and see if it's hotter than it says. Let me know what everyone thinks, going to do a 75% water change and put a normal filter back in.

The pic of your pleco looks to me like another fish was sucking on it after it died. Does your tank have a second pleco in there?

In the case of ick, all cranking the heat does is speed up the life cycle of the parasite so unless you are actually treating for it, it will just spread to other fish faster. Ick is easy to identify. There will be white dots on the fish body and tail. The fish will also be constantly scratching up against a rock or aquarium decoration.

This may have done you in. The power outage and monthly water changes. As already mentioned increase ur water changes to weekly with a dechlorinator and bottle of bacteria. Reduce temps and add some circulation.
