Put a thermostat in the tank and reading 10 degrees hotter than my heater is showing. I just recently took my thermostat out because It was always exact but I guess the heater shorted out when I lost power the other night. Im going to do a water change anyway but feel horrible about what happened, I'll be replacing the heater next week and until than monitoring the temp with the thermostat. Anyone have any other advice that could possibly help?

kno4te kno4te is right, water changes once a month is pretty bad for a regular aquarium, the build up of Nitrate, Nitrite and ammonia during that time will get quite high, then with large water changes will put your fish almost into shock from the sudden change of water parameters...

In this case though, im guessing the extra 10 degrees is what probably did your fish in this time, so just stick with lower temps when you get things up and running again and be sure to keep up with regular water changes and vaccum the bottom of your tanks to remove any possible ick sitting there, especially if you have a layer of substrate...

I had big plecos live ten to 12 years, and die from old age, & they always turn white after death.

It doesn't look starved either.

The heater could have actually burned your fish, as plecos like to hang on them.

But bottom fish suffer a lot from bad water quality.

The thing is, Plecos are tough. You won't notice right away.

They can withstand a lot, but eventually their organs fail from pollution.

So I did 75% water change along with vacuuming the bottom of the tank and seemed that everything was going back to normal, kept the temp down like everyone said monitoring it on the thermostat, now today 3 days later my green dwarf pike died and has some type of white fungus growth along with my flying fox not looking to well and I've had him over a year. Want to ask what could this be it almost looks like ick but i don't think it is. On another note put a filter in the tank after the water change (was using filter floss because was in middle of converting to a planted aquarium) and then immediately had a pungent sower odor coming from the tank, we took the filter out and put filter floss back in. This happened once before about 6 months ago but nothing happened, no death or anything. Trying to figure out what's going on will post a picture of the dead dwarf pike along with flying fox that might be dead now. Please help I don't know what's going on and love my fish

I can sense your frustration, but lets go over a few things so we can more clearly work out what your doing with your tank...

1. Exactly how often do you do water changes and how much water each time?

2. What filter were you originally running on this tank, and what filter or filters do you have now?

3. What are the temps of you tank currently

4. Did you ever test your waters parameters? If so please list them so we can rule out bad water quality?

5. What treatments have you use since the outbreak and are you still using any now?

6. What size is the tank and what other residents are left???

But from what i’ve read in the past, if you dealt with ick recently as you said, you could be now dealing with some type of secondary infections brought on from the weaker immune system...

It would help if you can answer the questions fat homer has suggested. This will help to figure out where the issue is and prevent future probs.
