This area is in Tanganyika Lake. I don't think this area has that color substrate. The substrate looks brown but we won't be able to tell since the picture is so green! Other areas of Africa probably does. Earl(King-eL) did say in bichir's natural habitat red/tan colored sand/dirt exist.

I can't remember where I saw a video clip but it showed a polypterus lurking around the rocks looking for a place to hide from tbe camera man. It would be nice if some one did a documentary on just them.
