Actually, there's several species of vals, this being one of the popular ones. There's also corkscrew vals, or V. spiralis

The white definitely makes for an interesting look. Here's a shot of my two tanks. I got bored today and decided to try and use my wife's camera again. I think the 55 came out pretty well, the 65 not-so-mcuh, but I was only switching between auto & sports shot settings with no flash, didn't get into shutter speed or any of that jazz.
The 55:
The 65 BEFORE I rearranged everything the other day--The root on the right is the same one you see on the left in the 55.
edit: The bubble wall looked a lot cooler like this in person than it does in any photos I took of it, fwiw
And the 65 after the rearrange, I think it looks a little cleaner now, I like it.
