I have a female KZZ Flowerhorn she is just 5 months old. I planning to breed her at the time she is ready. I have a juvenile male red devil he is 6-7 inches. I read in this forum that crossing FH and red devil is not a good idea. Do you guys try it or should i get a male fh for my female. Btw, i have no desire to sell the spawn if ever it would be successful. What i aiming for is experience in breeding and may be create a golden base FH.

I don't know much about fish breeding, but from a common sense standpoint, I think it is a potentially problematic project. I think you should stick to "purity" (not really pure if you think about it lol) and get a male for your female.

what you want to create by using red devil with flowerhorn. if you want golden base , GB males are already there, you get one.

Sounds allot like the project I have going on currently. My combo is a male Red Texas (unfaded) and a female ZZ Red Dragon FH (faded). The female happens to be a dwarf so the goal is to see if I can get them to breed true to size rather then color. She's roughly 5½years old and capped out at less the 6in.

One thing I will warn ya about is that you'll need to keep a very close eye on the pairing to make certain the male doesn't kill the female. The male I'm currently working with has 3 bodies under his belt so far and thus I need an especially close eye on him because he just can't be trusted at this point.

They are expensive and probably genetically weak. I want to create a flowerhorn that is a gb with small kok like the kampa kok and can live for 10 to 12 yrs. Not like the captive bred made in thailand that can live for 2 to few more yrs.

It is remarkably that she still alive for more than 5 yrs despite being a short body.

I will use the thai's caging technique. I am planning also to document the breeding process and post it here.

My only concern in doing the pure fh route is that the spawned may be weak since fh has been inbred in the past years producing beautiful fish. My theory is by injected a red devil blood it my increase the strength of the vigor of my fh strain.

O she isn't a short body by any means, she's just really small compared to other FH's. She is also my pride and joy lol. Here's a pic of her and her potential mate. Pink is female while the other is male.

what is your maintenance routine keeping this guys for more than 5 years. They look good!
Not too much honestly lol I only have to do maintenance about every other month on their tank (during the summer, I use rain water I collect). During winter it goes up a bit since I'm forced to use tap water instead. Generally it'll go up to once a month to sometimes twice. I also feed rather light so that helps a bit too along with having a couple of small catfish for any leftover food. I try to avoid using tap water as much as possible here just because our city water is just terrible quality and the rainwater I collect is by far much better for the fish. Granted this year has been kind of dry sadly.

Btw if you do decide to try and breed your FH with your RD I would highly recommend a strong separator or a minnow trap. More or less something to keep the 2 in the same tank without being able to physically interact. Ik that's how I have my pair at the moment, the male is inside of a minnow trap so I can safely feed everyone in the tank and make certain that the pair gets no unauthorized physical contact. Lol I may seem a lil overly paranoid about it but considering that he's killed 3 other fish including his last female I'd say it's warranted at this point. But each fish overall is different personality wise so hopefully your pairing turns out to be a bit more cooperative then mine has turned out to be.
