Proper Tank size for permanent home?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Breeder tanks generally are not taller then they are wide.

A 65g tank is 36 x 18 x 24".

Ok.... a 60g breeder is usually 36x18x24. Three feet of swimming space is not ideal for an adult male Flowerhorn, but it's doable. I'd still aim for a larger "permanent" home, though. :) Could you do a partial trade on Craigslist, get rid of the 60g and get a 75-90g? For some reason, a lot of people in my area have large tanks that they're trying to trade on CL for smaller ones. Might be an option...

I have a 46 gallon Bowfront tank that I'm currently housing my 5-6 inch Flowerhorn..

I guess I will go for a 90 gallon since its dimensions are the same as a 75 except a little taller.

Before I can discuss anything further about your fish being okay in that 60 gallon. Since you said the width is 18", what's the rest of the dimension?
A 3ft tank with 18" of width is definitely possible for a permanent home. I guess you guys haven't seen die hard FH keeper that will shed $2,000 just for 1 FH. Those guys keep most of their FH in 3ft tanks with 18" of width and their fish is easy 13-15" in 3-4 years. Very healthy and hardly any issue at all...
The only thing they would push it 75g+ is if they are breeding them. After breeding, there will only be 1 FH or non at all. Why non at all? They remove the eggs into a 10g or a 20g so it would be easier for power feeding and move the FH back into their original tank. Set up that 75g for next breeding and so on...

Just because it's common practice for FH keepers to have full-grown males in 3-foot tanks doesn't mean it's right, or best for the fish. The original poster here has one Flowerhorn as a pet, not several for a business. If he has the capability to give it a larger home, then it would be more kind to the fish. I wouldn't want to live in a 3-foot tank if I were a full-grown FH.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I'm not trying to pick a fight or be rude, and I hope I don't come across that way. I just think that when a FH is kept in a small or divided tank, it doesn't have as much room as it should.

Yes I understand that it is for a pet and hobby, not for business. But just because they are a die hard FH hobbyist spending big $$$ for their FH doesn't mean they buy it just for business purpose. And of course the bigger the tank the better it is for your fish. But I'm just stating what's the minimum limit. But when you are a die hard FH keeper with more than 10 different tanks just for FH, you will start cutting down the size of the tanks.
If you got the space and the $$$, go as big as you can. That is all I can say here.
