This species has been on my wish list for many years now... Aquired one in June of this year at 6-7" from Wes. Its been a few months with me now and hes quickly become one of my all time favorites. Ive had other african and south american sp. in the past and they just dont compare to this specimens activity level for a lung. He's very aware of me and his surroundings at a young age. Took my other lungs years to recognize me and feeding regimens. Currently at 8-9" now and housed in a 36"x18"x14" tub inside a 500gal system with 6gph autodrip.

Sure is...name is in the thread title.. Protopterus Aethiopicus Albino....id wager even "lutino" since he displays a bit of black/dark pigment with red eyes. A.k.a. "giant network lungfish" from the congo basin. Reaches lengths of 6ft. :)

It is super cute!!! :3 He looks so candid. Although I am sure it will become a big voracious Air breathing monster in a couple years.. Is the heater as efficient when it is in a pipe as you have it in this tank? I made a heater guard like this and since then it is super hard to get the water warmer than 75, even with a lot of current around the heater and a lot of holes in the pipe.

First off, thanks for the kind words!
2nd. Thats a very good question/thought about the heater and pvc cover. Off hand id say try a higher wattage heater. In this particular system there is a 300gal attached to the 230gal pictured and i have 2 additional heaters in that tank aswell as another in the systems sump so i dont notice much or actually never thought of that lol... have me curious now tho. id say drill more holes but uve already tried that. 90% of my heaters are covered in this fashion to protect my rays from being burned and i do have a hard time keeping them warm in the winter. Im also running cold water autodrips on all my tanks tho so there basically always on in the colder months. Id wager the pvc is absorbing the heat, staying warm, and preventing it from clicking back on. worst case scenario try another brand heater or higher wattage to see if it helps.

They grow so fast when they start eating. I love them! And from my experience this species hasn't killed any of my fish...yet lol
