Spotted puffers and figure eights need full marine saltwater when they are full grown. They will also beat each other up.

While it is recommended that GSP's have a full marine or a high end brackish environment as adults, F8's dont. Low end brackish environments are a F8's natural habitat. They dont migrate to the ocean like GSP's do.

Does this mean that I can gradually convert my brackish water tank to a salt water tank? I have a GSP that doesnt play well with others. I would be happy if I could gradually convert to a Marine tank with him in it and decorate with various salt water creatures/corals/anemone. Or maybe some salt water fish would be more compatible?

Yes, you can convert your GSP tank to SW, no problem. I have sucessfully kept mine with damselfish, tomato clownfish (maroons are too aggressive & percs are too weak) & other fast-moving fish, like wrasses. It all depends on the aggressiveness of the puffer though.

I don't know where folks keep getting the idea that loaches (especially clowns) are OK in BW. THEY ARE NOT BW FISH! They actually come from the opposite kind of water--soft water.

LOL, keeping a BW fish for 2 months in FW & saying it's fine, when in BW they can live 18+ years is a joke! After a decade-long study by a research scientist that has been keeping puffers for over 50 years, F8 are best kept in a SG of 1.005.

I saw them kept with scats and archers before but I agree with the other posts it could be a hitnmiss they are fin nippers even to each other.

Both also do well in SW.
