Purple labeo, a hippo-sucking aquarist nightmare from Africa

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fishman Dave Fishman Dave Thank you for this, Dave. The ID process of our fish started out with L. variegatus and L. cyclorhynchus and proceeded from there with the help of experts (see below). All I can do fetch you the threads on the basis of which I settled at the L. congoro ID.

Richard B is an expert level hobbyist and your countryman: https://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=41670&hilit=labeo

Cichlas knows his carp and is your countryman; posts #8,9,10 and so on: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...abeo-shark-in-miami-lake.656939/#post-7432826

So what do you think now? Do you still suppose my current species ID may be off?
Just saw your thread on planet catfish and am shocked at the extent of damage your purple labeo was able to inflict on your ID cats. What a jerk! Good thing you found some tankmates that are working with him

Took out the furniture from the jerk tank. Forgot to check later on any problems. 2 days later noted the ARTC got sucked on hard by Terrorist, the purple labeo, the alpha of the jerk tank. So the ARTC went to 1800g:

P phreeflow Yeah, I am not sure yet. The ARTC went into the pipe finally after a few days hanging out in the open and now him and the labeo don't interact much, at least I cannot catch it, nor do I see any new damage on either.

Yes the 2 ARTCs showed themselves very different vs the labeo but their circumstances, timing, etc. were different too. Moreover, the one that got badly defeated by the labeo used to most clearly and viciously dominate the other one when they were smaller in the same tank.

Fascinating. Seems there’s no clear answer with any of these species. Must be especially hard for you as you are charting new waters by housing monsters from all over world and seeing how they interact
