PVC may not be aquarium safe

Ha, well... let's see. I got her as a sub-adult when I was fourteen or fifteen. I'm twenty now. So while I don't know what her exact age was when I got her, I would guess she was probably a yearling; maybe a bit older but I'm willing to bet not by much. She was three inches or so when I got her, and she's palm sized now. And I've got big palms. :p I tried to pull her out for some pictures earlier... in addition to getting rid of the PVC, I did a big water change to get rid of whatever the white crap floating around my tank was... and she launched herself clean out of the tank. So... I guess no photo-op today xD

It's interesting that PVC has a specific temperature rating. I also hadn't considered the number of people who use PVC for sumps and things like that. I also wonder how much the specific pH value of the water affects the life of the PVC pipes.

I started looking into the specific safety of different kinds of plastics in response to all the news coverage that disposable plastic has been getting. I have more than a few rubbermaid enclosures for my amphibians, some of which are full of water. I know that's different than disposable plastic, but I was able to find a chart of the recycling codes and what they mean, and some of the enclosures I'd been using came up dirty for BPA and other nasties like that. So I've been trying to do my due diligence... if it's not good enough for me, it's not good enough for my animals :D

For my fishes sake, I hope you're wrong with the potential risks Bottomfeeder  Else, I have some work ahead of me this weekend.

Joking aside, on a related note I know there's also a good amount of debate/questioning on the use of sewer ABS type. I needed a black "T" for my set-up inside he tank and opted not to paint. After much reading, I concluded that it was safe for what I was doing.

Interesting, continue your research and report your findings. Information is valuable

Carbon, purigen (and similar) along with WC probably do a pretty good job of removing any small amount of leaching if it's occurring at all.

Hi OP,

I have a 30g with a pair of convicts. Based on your experience do you think if I got a female belly crawler it could live with the pair and clean up the fry?

I have always been skeptical on using anything plastic in my aquariums. I only like natural sand, rock, wood and plants. I have never used PVC and won’t. Doesn’t look good in a display tank anyway IMO.

I wouldn’t.
1. Convicts will kill it.
2. Water requirements are different.
3. A belly crawler would be too big for a 30g.

This thread is over 5 years old and the op hasn't posted since Feb of 2019. I don't think they are going to answer you. Toiletcar Toiletcar has some good answers though.
