Won't the silicone be almost the same thing as gluing the threads?

Don't use teflon paste. Use the regular gray thread sealant paste. The teflon stuff doesn't seal as well & will leech into the water. Both are very messy though. If you can get the job done leak free with teflon tape it's by far the best way to go for anything 1/2" or less.
 
Thank you for that. It just goes to show that everyone has an opinion, and everyone is right in their own rite. I'll stick with my teflon tape. I have tons of experience with pastes and different brands of silicones, and I just favor tape. When parts have to come apart, nothing cleans up easier.

I prefer the tape as well
