Questions Regarding Pothos(Golden Ivy) Roots

An old setup growing some pothos indoors with lights. It really works. It's in all my freshwater tanks now.

This is my outdoor tank. On the left I'm growing pothos and on the right I am growing vines from a garnet yam. The fish will eat these right up so you have to protect the roots in both cases.

Wowzer!! Nice setup.. Is that pothos from one vine or multiple?

Really diggin' your setup.. simple yet nice and effective.. couldn't spot any algae on the glass :WHOA:
Are those leaves in the middle from sweet potatoes? Fish eat the vines & roots?

There are multiple pothos vines in each photo.

You can't see much algae because of reflections, plus snails and two 12" sailfin plecos who clean the glass.

The sweet potato is really a red Garnet Yam.

Most of the fish will eat the roots of either plant, but not the leaves and stems AFAICT.

Interesting.. I will have to watch for my green terrors on any root eating activities :nilly:
Both fish are still juvies and from what I observed, they don’t go near the roots much..

The garnet yam roots must be off the charts.. I believe they sprout much quicker than pothos?

What light do you use for your indoor pothos? And also the duration of light for the plants..

Lighting varies from tank to tank. I don't have a rigid schedule. Some get natural light too.
Usually pothos doesn't require lots of light.

Some of my lights are commercial LED bars, and some I built. One is a K-mart grow-light stick.
I built a few from various bulbs.

You are thinking of Pearlite. Vermiculite is like mica and varies in color.

True...in my area the names have been used interchangeably in garden centers. But to answer the OP, I've never had pearlite bother fish. Biggest concern would be them swallowing it by mistake.

I noticed water droplets at the tip of some of the pothos leaves.. is this normal?

I saw your thread on submerged pothos plant.. Gonna read through every post in there.. Have only browsed through few pages and it's interesting to see how the whole plant can live/thrive underwater :WHOA:

Yup, it does great with "dirty" fish in an established tank. As long as it has a full root system just rinse and toss it in!
