I used quickcrete concrete and ALL my fish DIED.. Naaaah.. J/K.. Really they didn't.. I cured the concrete for 3 weeks. I used solar salt, about 4 cups worth for each application. The salt leaches the concrete of the hardness. I would soak the salt and tank background and run three powerheads pointing towards the wall. This is very important. After two days I drain tank, refill, put back in 4 cups of salt and repeat process.
You know it's safe when the pH in your tank doesn't raise. My overnite baseline pH was 7.2. Tank water overnite pH was 8.0, higher than my pH scale. After I cured it, my water stayed at 7.2 rock solid.
I know have had discus in this tank fsince August of last year and they are thriving.
