Okay, so after finding virtually no info on putting a real skull in the tank, I decided to clean it up and give it a shot...and here's what I got...

The Riccia on top was an idea to get a mossy look as it grew on.
BUT...after a few days, the covering of the horns began to disintegrate slowly, basically turning into goo. So here's what's left...

All in all, not too bad. As the Riccia grows it's going to look pretty cool. I'm monitoring all levels every couple days and so far so good. I added a small piece of driftwood to offset the decomposition and addition of extra calcium into the tank and I think I've found a good balance. So anybody else wondering--here's your answer. Clean it, boil it, clean it again (no soap obviously!) and let 'er rip.

wat else is in the tank looks like theres some other fish sitting in the gravel. looks like some kinda of pike but idk lol just a guess.

I added some bones to my tank about 3 month ago and after 2 and a half monthes everything was fine till the bones started decomp. My fish start acting wierd and all got sick from the calcium. I would advise against but its your tank and your fish.

no way lol. i got a deer skull plus antlers and it is fine. how the f did that disentrgrate in only a few days. you got acid rain? lol

deer antlers are much different from the covering of ram's horn. that covering is more like hair or fingernails than bone.

I have a ram's horn i'm planning on using in a new aquarium (when I get it).

at least now i know to remove the covering, and put only the bony part in.

looks great and thanks for the info!

I always wanted to try it... But with a human skull...

my high school anatomy teacher had a real human skeleton for demonstration purposes. he kept it in a box, and could put it together. the cartilage in the rib cage looked like beef jerky. simultaneously nasty and creepy. doubt you could get your hands on one without some type of science/teaching credentials, and it would be unethical to use it as decor in your tank...

okay, completely off topic.

si have a coyote skull im thinking about doing that with :)
