Reasonable price for full size denison barbs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To my happy surprise my LFS has full size dennison barbs...at $35 each. This seem about right or bloated pricing?

I'd call that awesome pricing and I'd probably buy a handful if I saw them that cheap.

Last time I saw them for sale here I think they were $120NZD or $75 USD each for smallish ones. I remember it because I thought, "Holy crap they went up in price!" That must have been 5-10 years ago.

From what I can tell they're still legal to Import, but it has been made more difficult and risky due to being categorized as a high disease risk. Importers don't like to spend thousands importing fish and then have the entire shipment destroyed because one is diseased.

May I offer the suggestion of giant danios? They are a nice size, fast, and won’t hurt your wallet too bad if the oscar decides he wants to eat one.

Price seems a bit high to me but not outrageous. For whatever reason, this is an expensive fish. Supply/demand I suppose.

It's odd but most of the giant danios I see are snack size...I don't consider them rare so its strange to not run across some larger ones. But I like them.

Filamented or mascara would do ok as they get large like james99 james99 said. But they dont grow super fast. Ive bred filamented, had 2 males with 4 females actually bred twice in the year I had them. As with all large barbs they will eat any plants. Spanners and giant danios will become lunch.

I wonder if astyanax tetras could hang

Some people use larger live bearers with oscars
