You really need to learn more about Piranha's before giving false info

he did make a point. all pygocentrus are shoaling fish and should be kept in groups. im not saying one cant live by it's self, but they should be kept together. either way i would not trust any fish with any piranha. so i would say no as well.

this is for everyone out there say that pygocentrus should be shoaling...they does not shaol. They could only tolerate each other in GROUP... piranha they deosnt shoal together if you use the shoalig term.

The the wild there is tons of current, new water and space of course they can be group together. But we are talking about aquarium here. 2 different place, envoirment, and water.

IMO piranha do best in a sinlge tank rahter it be pygo or serra.

look at the stickys, theres some sugestions there

i'd say some small tetras they are fast so thats why they may work

the small tetras are a good idea mostly because they are cheap and are not heart breaking to lose. I have to get around 10 a month or so but i like the extra life in my tank since mt p's mostly just hang out by the drift wood

as long as you provide proper tank conditions and meet all of their basic requirements there is no reason you cant keep a small shoal of pygos. it is perfectly natural. like i said though...you need to be able to meet all of their requirements. if you put too many of them in too small of a tank of course you will have problems.

Ive done 10 p's in a 125 with silver dollars. they look similar I dont know if this helped or not but the p's never bothered them, had them together for about 3 years before selling my setup.
As for the one piranha I dont know much about the health factor for the fish or why it only tolerates other piranha in the wild and not in a tank or vise versa, my point is only this because it is a skittish fish why would you want only one, someone on here said it earlier its like having only one Tetra, pointless in my opinion, evern with other fish in the tank. hope this helps in your disecion.

I agree the best tankmate for a RBP would be another RBP...a snakehead, wolf, or another large predatory fish would easily kill a single P. And any fish not equally equipped would be killed by the "P". I dont know much about the behaviour of "P's"(Red Belly Piranhas) but I have always heard they do better in a larger group to disperse aggression. Either way one fish will be severly injured or killed and if this can be predicted why not avoid it all together.

how caome nobady has said anything about him keeping a solo rbp?

its stupid. in the wild, they live in shoals that are made up of dozens of fish. having just one piranha is like having one neon tetra. the fish won't live as long, will have lots of disease from stress, and will be more prone to attacking smaller fish.

if you read some sort of RELIABLE webpage or book, i wouldn't have had to explain this to you.:screwy:

Your kidding me right? I dont even know what to say to this... You start a "shoal" and ill keep another solo red. We will see what lasts longer, lives healthier, disease, stress, blah blah blah. Reds dont do any better in "shoals" than they do solo.
Maybe YOU should be the one to read some sort of webpage or book to learn about the species before you go mouthing off about something you obviously know nothing about.
If you want proof Ill post that my solo red is NOT a waste of tank space and is just as aggressive if not MORE aggressive than a "shoal" of reds.
