Red face severum

I've seen two different sev's call this ... the fairly common Rotkeil aka red shoulder and the rarer Rio Tapajos red nosed greens ... it depends which one you are interested in.

The fish was labeled red head or redface severum... Spotted. I'll have to get a picture. Are their temperaments the same generally? Tank mates?

You'll need a picture. Common names really don't tell us much.

Most severums have the same temperament. They do well with other medium to large cichlids that are peaceful to semi-aggressive. They will eat small fish and usually aquarium plants, but otherwise they don't usually act aggressively toward other fish unless they are spawning. There's a moderate level of conspecific aggression, so they will chase and pick at each other if you only have a couple. I usually try to keep 4 - 6 per tank and that evens out the aggression a bit.

Just a size difference, as Ryan said the temperament is pretty much the same.

It's a male Heros notatus. They are not "red head" or "red face" by any means and you're looking at its final adult coloration, but they are gorgeous fish regardless and one of my very favorite species of severum.

Thanks for the ID. My boyfriend bought this guy on a limb. How big do they get?

I have a 120g with a 5" Texas (runs the tank), 5" red devil (minds his own business), 5" JD, 3-4" Mayan, and a hybrid that I've been told is boucourti/bifa mix. Do you think the severum will be okay in there? Lol

I have him in a grow out right now with some of my fry. I don't know what to do with this guy. We're getting a 90 gallon this week.

Good looking sev.

For now it might work but that red devil will definitely turn into a killer one day.

No, I don't think the severum will do well in that tank. The notatus can be pretty territorial when spawning but they are not pushy, aggressive fish. The red devil will eventually rule that tank, IMO, when it gets larger. You can try it but I'd be prepared to relocate the severum to more peaceful quarters.
