Red/pink tail chalceus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Had them before, and yes, they'll be fine as a pair, but probably better off as a school.

My problem with them is their flightiness. The things just go insane over the littlest stuff i.e. a move towards the tank. They're not so bad when the light's on, but when it's not, they just sprint into the nearest aquarium wall. Silly buggers - not very bright.

Totally agree. My 3 go ape when ever i enter the room. They are fine when i'm in there but go bezerk at the sight of the door opening. Or when I'm ironing. Because that's also one of the scariest activities a person can do. Obviously.

I got my 3 when they weer about 5" and are roughly 7" a piece and haven't grown noticably for 6 months.

haha of course the scary iron monster is going to come get them LOL thats realy funny though that they are that skittish, dont know how they will do with the aggressive cichlids then but i will try it out and see, and what is the difference between the red and pick tail chalceus, i thought they were the same thing just with variations in tail color...

Red and Pink tails are very similar species.. but with one difference.. the scales.. Red tails are silver with black outline.. Pink tails are silvery with a pink line in the middle. I've also notice the heads of both to be different.. as Pink tails are more sleek, Red Tails are more like fast moving torpedos.

In terms of behavior.. I would have to get a pink tail to see.. Can never find one around my area...

oh ok awesome thanks for clearing that up

i've been searching for shoal fish for my 75 gallon. i was just visiting a lfs today. they had the pink tails for $12.99 each. i thought that was a tad bit high, so i ended up going to petsmart and got 2 tinfoils and 2 goldfoil barbs. i only paid $4 each for the barbs and they are some good looking barbs . . . sometimes petsmart can be a good source for fish.

sure its a good place to get fish.. but i think she wants to get pinktails.. and u paid what u get... ;)
However.. I have seen pink tails for 4.99 in some LFS.. and i have also seen people label Cigar Barbs as pink tails... Goes to show you some LFS dont know much about the fish.. or they are scamming... :(

Mine is probably 8" and doesn't seem to be growing much anymore. He's getting thicker though, he eats floating pellets and f/d krill mostly.

My cigar shark annoys my chalceus so I'm trying to sell him. He constantly swims up to him and nudges him around...but the nice thing is since the cigar shark is in there my chal is less jumpy. Now it's only occasionally when the light's out, it used to be much worse.

I had a pink tail for 2.5 years and they are cool fish. I bought him at 4" and he grew to 6" within a few months and started to pack on some weight. But he didn't grow much after that. The video posted above makes me feel bad for my pink tail because it looks like they are obviously a schooling fish. Mine would just hoover in the same spot (unless it was feeding time...he would go nuts for pellets). He's in the far right of the full tank shot pic below...that was his spot...he didn't stray too far from there and definitely never swam around like the pink tails in the video. I don't have any tanks right now, but for my next setup I'm definitely going to get a school of 5 to 7 Pink Tails.
