For instance, a curt answer in the imperative form coming from a complete stranger is heavily impregnated with possible misinterpretations.

I liked your picturesque analogy but my comment was general, not directed at anyone or you in particular.

The best, most wise and well-intentioned advice but given in the wrong form, going back to my example, in the form of a bare, military-style order, can be an instant turn off and will be amiss. It has its place, surely, but this is not an Army (this has nothing to do with you being apparently an Army guy, purely coincidental )
