Can a school of these fit in a 55 gallon with a Senegal Bichir?
Don't be confused with Tinfoil Barbs, they're different

If it were me I wouldn't try it. Even an 8 inch barb is a solid fish and they are too active to confine to a 55. Not saying it can't be done but imo its pushing the limits. Why not go with giant danios or a smaller barb instead? Most tinfoil barbs are very fast and greedy and won't let any food get down to the bichir as well. Keep that in mind with whatever you decide

I have one in my 55 with my African cichlids, silver dollars and giant Asian upside down catfish and it seems to do really well. Its good cause the cichlids can't catch it cause it's too fast. But more then one would probably overcrowded the tank

A single 12 inch fish is pushing it in a 55. A school? With other fish? No way.

Quick link to a good profile I found on them online:

With an 8" Fish, I really still think you'd be pushing it in a 55 with a reasonably sized group of 5 or 6 fish.

While I must admit that a group of them would look awesome I would say that to keep them you may look into picking up another tank with a greater depth than a standard 55 maybe something more around the lines of a 90 or better yet something with both width and depth, like a 120 long or larger.

Also, from further reading I noticed that I kept seeing that these were greedy fish when it came to eating. So you may have trouble feeding your Bichir, which I know from experience are slow eaters.

I've seen pictures of the red tailed tinfoil barb reaching 12". they do generally get smaller than regular tinfoils but given enough space they will get larger than 8". either way they are big deep thick fish and I wouldn't keep them in anything less than 5' in length. you could keep them in the 55 until they hit too large a size and then sell them off and replace with another kind of dither?

how about silver dollars? the spotted kind stay pretty small

ps.

I have 3 tinfoils (unsure of wether they are red tails or not) with 4 bichirs and I have no trouble feeding the bichirs.
I feed the barbs, chocolate cichlid, pink tailed chalceus and giant gourami during the day, and I drop predator sinking stuff in at night for my Bichirs, clown knife and asian upside down catfish. if you feed the nocturnal fish at night when they are most active you never have any issues

Altus get as large as Schwanenfeldii they just lack the black in their tail. I had a shoal of 5 that quickly reached 14".

You should look into filamentosa barbs. Very nice looking (probably the best looking barb IMHO), and don't get QUITE as big.

i'd say denison barbs are the best looking ;) ... I'm debating between a Jack Dempsey or a school of Denison Barbs as tankmates for the Bichir. Which would you guys suggest?
