Red texas cichlid

It doesn't take a decade to produce a nice strain of red texas, but it does take a lot of tanks, time, & some serious dedication to produce anything of quality on a regular basis. Most of what I see referred to as 'red' texas these days falls far short of the mark, hence the reason why high quality specimens cost what they do.

Green texas x female KKP = a1
best a1 x female KKP = a2
best a2 x Female green texas = good fry

If it was that easy, everyone would be breeding high quality red tex.

The reality is that no matter what you breed with what, only a very small percentage of the offspring will be of high quality, most will be heavy on the carpinitis side with washed out pink/orange for a base color.

wow, gabeA185, welcome to MFK. you brought this thread back from the dead. lol, if you want good quality red texas pm chris (cjbarth) he's got it down!

if you wanna go all out throw in some kamfa or red ignots/mammoths takes time and $$$ tho

Linebreeding. Carpintis x midas or blood parrot. From that generation you keep the best faded female and breed it to a different carpintis. With that spawn you pick the best female and breed it to another carpintis. Keep up this process until you find something you like and if you can find a fertile faded male (probably not going to happen) then breed that for your best chance of red.

Or you could just buy some amazing fry from cj barth who is a member on here.

Thanks bro!! You are always giving me props for my RT....BTW CAM.....I did get 1 confirmed fertile male...hes is about 8.5 inches and still turning red!!!! I will eventuall be breeding him to a female KKP or another female red texas of mine....or a faded female RT from a friend possible....but either way.....things are still progressing in my breeding program!! oh and as for fry......always!!!! (got a tanks full of faded or fading juvies to....those are for the future...have to plan ahead and keep things going if something should ever happen to my female RT)

Thanks again Bro for Lookin' out!!!

No problem chris I just watched your videos this morning after youtube sent me my monthly subscription or whatever. Looks like you have a great variety between those 2 videos. That's awesome about the fertile male your strain should progress even farther with him. Keep up the good work.

It does take a decade(if not - probably more) from scratch and work your way up. That is...if we're talking about high to top end quality.

Really, and how many strains of red texas have you personally created via controlled line breeding? Honestly, I think that I would faint if you ever had an original thought based on your own experiences with keeping & breeding fish, vs the hearsay of others.

Keep up the good work, Chris.
