You could just adjust the ball valve on the output on your canister. People use ball valves to adjust the flow on return pumps all the time. You could also make a spray bar as also mentioned.

Thats what the valves are for. That said however, only limit flow on the OUTPUT, as limiting flow on the input is what damages pumps and seals, and causes cavitation
