The Lone Star State!
Hi, fishy folks! I am preparing to start up a new African tank (Malawi Mbuna) and have a question. In a previous set-up, I had two Frontosa, a Red Zebra, and a Blue Peacock in one 55g tank with two Reed Fish. I never had any issues with aggression toward the gentle Reed Fish, but I always worried that the water conditions weren't really optimal for them. Have any of you tried this combination before? If so, what are your observations? If not, what do you think?

do not mess with your water parameters for african rift lake cichlids, and most other fish for that matter; they can adapt to anything.

reed fish do fine with mbuna, i have such a setup myself.

Reedfish are very adaptable, most of the waters they live in vary annually from clear and soft to turbid and muddy, they live in swamps subect to extreeme variations.

and are a member of the Polypterid family just thought i'd mention it lol

I'm currently getting ready to expand from a 55 gal. to a 180 gal and have all cichlids in my tank with the exception of a bichar fish, a large pleco, and a 13 inch reed fish that I bought as a juvenile they all blend very well together. Another thing that is real cool if you want your reed fish to grow fast... feed it ghost shrimp, it's pretty cool to watch.

I've got 2 in mine and no problems. Actually my smaller one picks on the larger one but the cichlids don't bother them.

I would not mix it with mbuna, because there is a chance of it getting picked on. I would bet it should be ok with something like peacocks or something that isn't as active and aggressive
