in many public aquariums, stingrays have their stingers surgically removed. I remember while interning at the New York Aquarium, they used to have CowNose Stingrays in their touch tank and as a result they removed their stingers.
Actually, we don't remove them, we trim them back.....repeatedly. They are made of the same stuff your fingernails are, so trimming them encourages them to grow faster. It's a pain in the butt to do. Search a bit, and you'll find pics of me doing it.
you guys are so funny... you should first think about why someone cuts the stinger of the rays!
I have to trim the stingers of my P14, because the male is a bit crazy... He ate the thrown stinger of the female! And it was just luck, that he got no bad injuries. To avoid, that this will happen again, i cut the top of the stinger regularly. For the ray it's nothing else than cutting fingernails.
