Hi,

I bought a Rena Filstar Xp3 Canister a few weeks ago. I installed it and ran it and for about 2 weeks it was quiet as hell!!! Only noise would be if you went right up to the filter and listened to it and you'd hear soft trickling water noises every once in a while that were very quiet and good to the ears.

But then all of a sudden, last week it became noisier. You can actually hear the motor or whatever it is. It's not LOUD but it's there. If you go by the tank you can hear it.....the sound does not sound like anything is broken, it just sounds like you can hear the motor working. Kinda like a noisy HOB filter.

Anyone know what to do or ever had experience with this before?

Thanks!

as soon as any filter becomes noisy its a good idea to shut ot down and pop out the empeller clean it and stick back in somes times a bit of sand or debris gets in and it will wreck your motor first though give it a good shake while its running and turn it upside down it may just be air that was trapped and is working its way out also the unit might buzzing on the stand somes times moving it to a rubber mat helps make sure its not touching on anything ..

That is prob 99% the cause and right.....one grain of sand will send that thing into the loudest mode......

Is the pick up tube close to the bottom of the tank where there is tiny bravel or sand...If so move it up so this problem dont happpen again

The intake tube is about 3" off the ground but I don't have any sand...just 10 year old gravel.

I will move it up and shake it too.

Is it really okay to shake it while it's running and turn it upside down too? No leaking or lid coming off?

Thanks alot for the help guys! Appreciate it alot!

What's the result/cause of the noise...I have 2 XP3's & 1XP2...I'd like to know so I will be able to use for future reference.

Sounds like either just some air bubbles or what the others have stated. I bought my XP3 a couple of weeks ago and it is awesome. Blows the Fluval 404 out of the water which makes random noise a hell of alot more and is a ***** to syphon.(built in pump is garbage)

do it

got an xp3 3 weeks ago, had the same problem. "fishnutham's" right... mine had some air on the sray bar and just cleaned the whole canister. with regards to the sand... mine is bare bottom, so no sand at all. it gets into my nerves when they are so quite when new and just 2-3 weeks they seemed like a wreck ;)
