Is there any other type of hose that I could use that's readily available at LFS's or big box stores?

If not, where's the best place to get replacement fluval hoses?

Yeah, I thought about that too. I have not had to face that problem yet. The hose connectors are a bit funky. May have to suck it up and buy the proprietary band hose. :irked: ...unless somebody knows a trick.

yeah that's what I was worried about fish head....

As said above, you can just use some clear plastic 20mm hose from a local hardware store from their irrigation area. From teh same area you can get same size Irrigation PVC (Hard) pipe. THis is good for keeping tings neater rather than having winding hoses around the place. It works, I have it to pipe water up to my tank and it is a 4 foot deep tank.
The canister filters i have used it on are an Ototto and a Resun (I think) both are on this same tank.

First off, welcome to MFK!

Thanks for using your first post to help out, that's cool.

I think I may just go with the pvc idea (I never thought to use hard plumbing on a canister filter) and see how that works out.

Thanks.

I do not see how you can use hard pipe on a fluval canister. The hose has to pull straight up from the top when disconnecting. Hard line will not allow that.

Using thin clear silicon hose (from the hardware store) will not work on the filter intake side. I found the hose wouldnt stay open under suction, it would just squeeze flat since the hose walls were too thin. You could use reinforced hose but this is as expensive as proprietry brand hose. Clear hose in daylight would get algae too so you would have a slower flow unless you cleaned it regularly. If you use hardware hose, try to get thivk walled hose. I ended up using the real Fluval hose.
