Anyone familiar with using these? Are they a bunch of bologna?

My one female box turtle must have gotten something in her eye because it's stuck shut. There is a little bit of a white discharge from it but it's not swollen or anything. I noticed it on Monday and I've been soaking her in warm water 3-4 times a day. After a soaking her eye opens and looks fine. Soaking usually solves the problem but when she dries out for a while, she closes her eye and it sticks shut again. I have used natural tears eye drops before and they've worked fine but I was wondering if anyone had luck with the eye drops made specially for reptiles containing Vitamin A.

i dont have human eyedrops near me to check ingidients and proportions but i got these ingredients from Zoo Med's repti eyedrops...

IngedientsWater (isotonic saline solution), solubizing hydrotope, Vitamin A palmitate in an oil base, and cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12).

Directions
For closed eyes:
Apply one or two drops per eye each day for one week. If you see no improvement after one week, consult a reptile veterinarian.

hope that helps you vicous...

ps. if your really worried you can use some saline just to rinse it through until you have time to find out more about the eyedrops

Thanks Vice. I googled reptile eye drops last night and I came up with a few brands. The question is, do most pet stores carry these? I'm assuming I would have to order them online. Like I said, I was just curious if anyone has used them before. At the moment I am using a sterile saline solution to flush her eyes out.

Here is my only concern about the whole situation I'm in: it's getting close to hibernation season for my turtles. If anyone isn't familiar with my turtles, they live outside all year long. So I'd really like her eye to get better before she goes into hibernation. Lucky for me and her, it's been a warm fall and it's suppose to be in mid 80's for the next couple of days

most stores will sell them ...the store i used to work at sold the zoo med brand, i have used them on RES that eyes would shut and formed what looked like a white "third eye lid" and it did help like a said if you see stuff saline never hurts (but im sure you knew that already)

i have used the zoo med a few times and it has always done the job

Sounds good, but what were you using it on? A turtle or lizard?

Right now I'm just using some natural tears eye drops and they seem to be doing the trick. And just to play it safe, I added a little cod liver oil to her food for an extra boost of vitamins A and D.

I've heard of their eyes getting stuck shut due to vitamin A deficiencies, so the eye drops and the cod oil should be about all you need to do. After all the problems clear up, I'd keep supplementing with a little of the cod oil once or twice every week.

I'm just over reacting but I just want to play it safe. She's my favorite turtle and I've had her for 20 years now. I'd really hate for something to ever happen to her. I really think she just has something irritating her eye becaue it's only her left eye that is closed. Plus none of my other turtles are sick. I will keep giving her the cod liver oil anyways. I usually sprinkle a little on all my turtles food once a month.
