I like RHP's, especially in my outdoor enclosures. I use them in my night time hides on some of the cooler nights. But I did have one malfunction and burn up a dog house in one of my large tortoise runs. No tortoises were harmed. I still feel safer using RHP's for this purpose than using flood lights.

What basking temps are you getting with the RHP's you're using? I need to get 110-120F for my rhino iggy, and I may need to get higher if I go with dwarf monitors in the future.

I'm not sure you'd get the same basking response from dedicated baskers like the igs and monitors when using RHP's. I'll wait to hear from folks who've used them, but I know when I tried using CHE's with basking animals I had trouble getting a hot spot and even when I did the lizards seemed to just hang out in the hot end as opposed to "basking"; they seem to orient themselves to a light source better than to a heat source.
You will have a hard time getting those kind of temps with a rhp. I have one in a snake cage, cage is 6x2x2 with a 120 watt panel I believe. Its a pretty big thing.
Anyway, mine cannot get a warm enough basking spot on the ground by itself. I had to add a couple of flexwatt strips under the tank to warm it up a bit more. So, imo, it will work great for getting the overall cage temps up, however the basking spot you will need something else to help it.
How big of a spot are you shooting for? Low wattage halogen floods (instead of spots) should do it, just play around moving the bulb closer/further from the basking surface to see what you get.
Is this for the caiman or something else? If there's any risk of water splashing on the bulbs then I wouldn't go with halogens.
Ill have to head to walmart to check things out. It isnt as attractive, but the enclosure is staying a bit cooler than id like. she doesnt mind, hangs out in the water that is really warm(78) but id still like to have a warm spot for her.
Hey lep, why don't you get a pendant style lamp with a halogen flood lamp? You'll be able to adjust how high/low it hangs to get the temperature just where you need it. And a single pendant hanging down into the enclosure won't look bad at all.
go with regular flood lights. i use them with both of my iggs and i have no complaints. if you need to run it at night just get a colored one and you are good to go!
