Rio otapa swordtails in the US

I saw Otapa on the Thatfishplace web site.
I had a spawning group of X mayae a few years back in Milwaukee, and other wild type swords are commonly kept by aquarists there.
You may want to put a query on the Milwaukee Aquarium Society web site forum.

Very nice mayae! How big did they get?

That Fish Place is near me. They haven't had them in stock for awhile.
When they did, they didn't look any different than the green swordtails. The green swordtails even had spots, which I never saw on a green swordtail. Wonder if they got the labels wrong lol.
I read on the ALA that green swordtails are hybrids, but they don't really look like to me. Like cichlids, if you want the real deal, buy from a reputable place.

What cichlids do you have? If you are open to other large livebarers look at Poecilia petenensis. They will get larger than the swords. I think they max out around 8".

Wow I do really like those. Great color as well. Tank is a 84x30x30" (330g) Will have a Vieja Synspilum pair, 10 Thorichthys meeki, 10 Thorichthys pasionis, and was looking to add a school of wild swordtails to keep it interesting. But the mollies are still an option

Is thatfishplace a reputable seller? I have seen them many times before but always steered away from them. Something always seemed funky to me. Ill check out Milwaukee aquarium society thats not a bad idea

Sounds like an amazing tank. I have 4 meeki, 6 pasionis, 3 panchovallai and a few others. I want livebarers, but I have astyanax bimculatus now. I tried adding green swordtails and they became food for the tetras. Once I get another tank like a 125g, I'll split the cichlids and keep the tetras in there. I just don't want to risk any expensive livebarers.
As for That Fish Place-even if they had the Rio Otapa in stock, I'd still pay for shipping somewhere else. I would pay more to know they are that is what I'm getting. A lot of their cichlids are mislabeled. Like the thorichthys aureus is really ellioti. If you do buy fish from them, be sure you quarantinened them. Some will have ich and other diseases.

Sounds like a pretty cool stock you got yourself as well. I want to try and find something on the larger side to put in the tank and let the others grow since they are juvies still. Currently just have the sysnpilum at about 4". Thats why I think im going to lean towards the sailfin mollies.

Exactly why I would never order there lol. It always looked sketchy that I couldnt even think about ordering

I have read some good reviews on them. They mostly have guppies, but have wild mollies too.

The female mayae hit maybe 3" and were thick, the males with sword hit 3" but much thinner of course.

I checked out swamp river and it looks like hes got some good stuff. Will be on my list of places.

Also I believe duanes is referring to their body size while Select aquatics is referring to their overall length including the sword

Ok that makes sense.

Keep an eye on Goliad Farms for petenesis. I have seen them have the Rio Campeche, which are amazing.
