Roof Coating for sealing a plywood tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cool..i wasnt sure. i know people have used rubber coatings before. Didnt know which ones were safe. Anybody know any other cheaper alternatives to epoxy?? I've used sweetwater and its great, but just too expensive. And im currently trying the boat building epoxy from USComposites.com. I'm pretty positive its safe and its definately cheaper.

Have used it. May use again. Most have issues with pinholes even after multiple coats. If i were to use it again I would pour coat it rather than paint it on to get thicker coverage without the pinholes. I would then to several paint coatings, letting each one get tacky dry before appklying the next.

As for the earlier reply, please do your research before answering questions like this. If you do not know. Don't answer. Snow Seal is another brand name for this product. Exact same thing. both have been used in the hobby many times. Some like it, some don't. Most issues have been with blistering due to pinholes from inadequate application.

Thanks rivermud...I may end up trying it on a small project. I figure a rubber like coating wouldnt leach any chemicals out into the water, but i was worried about long term effects. I also was assuming that since this stuff is used on roofs, that it couldnt be that bad or else chemicals would eventually end up in the soil and effect grass and living things.

first off i am a roofer. i've never seen a coating at lowes that i would be willing to put on a customers building, let alone trust to keep my fish safe. mind you, this is just my opinion.

what kind of coatings do you use?? I dont mean anything like tar lol but do you know of any rubber like material as an alternative to pricey epoxy??

 I've heard of Snow seal as many times as I've heard of Kool Seal... Zero. and No one here has ever mentioned the two products before so dont get all high and mighty on me for telling someone not to use a cheap roof coating for fish.

KLee79 again I wouldnt use that stuff for anything to do with fish. it might resist water but its not made to be constantly submerged in water so use it at your own risk. If you cant afford epoxy then use Drylock, that IS a product many people have used with success.

Since you still decide to post opinion without research, let me help you.

Elasto based products have been used several times in the hobby for many years. Your opinion is based on the fact that you've not seen it or used it. I decided on Ames Elasto Barrier instead of Snow Seal or Kool Seal for this reason:

Ames Elasto Barrier

"Super Elasto-Barrier has been specially formulated for colder weather and to resist fungus, mold, and mildew. Super Elasto-Barrier is potable water compliant, and contains no toxic substances after curing. "

This product is similar to Snow Seal and Kool Seal. The Ames product is the only one I have found however that lists itself as potable water safe. All three of these products are elastomeric roof coatings. Also, ames comes in a gray rather than the bright bright white. I infact used snow seal then elastobarrier alternately to make sure i had coverage since one was white and the other grey. In retrospect i would have poured the product rather than painting because it requires thick coatings and a paint brush does not work well with it.
