Running an Ozone generator in a room with a tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have no idea why this thread was moved into Setup and Filtration, since it has nothing to do with either of those things, but the machine arrived today. It's much smaller than I was expecting.

The instruction manual was worthless but I called them and asked about other pets and fish, and as long as the door is sealed off, the cats will be fine if I leave them there, but if I want to treat the hallway, I should either lock them into a different room (impossible) or get them out.

He wasn't able to give me any real information about fish though, other than that it could be bad for the rubber bladder of an air pump. The O2 surface exchange is still a concern to me, because I don't really know the science and amounts involved there. It doesn't affect my first use for mold killing, but it'd still be nice to know for the future.

I'm going to try one in our fish/greenhouse. Any updates on this topic? Is it true that ozone breaks down when it hits water? I've got a 2600 gallon tank in a 12'x18' room.

if you are concerned with mold and mildew, get a dehumidifier and set it to 50. Make sure tanks are covered.
then go to homedepot and get mold killer. use these two in conjunction to kill the mold and prevent mold growth rather than allowing it to grow and killing it as it becomes a noticeable problem.

that is the technique i have used after floods and water intrusions.

Many people on the reef side of the hobby use ozone and pump it directly into their skimmers. It breaks down very easily, can be removed with carbon. I intend to use it on my system whenever I eventually get it set up.

So that said, only real concerns I see using it in a room would be it breaking down rubber seals in parts. Your fish will be fine, it just isn't pumping that much into the air.
