Greetings, currently i own a 240g (8x3x2) and its been emptied as my clown knife of 13 years has passed.
I wanted to slightly scape the tank and i was thinking of adding a sailfin pim into the tank, not to be confused with the marbled catfish which is significantly larger. Is this fish compatible with my tank size? I would also like to know what tankmates it could coexist with, I was planning on adding a couple Gymnothorax polyuranodon and creating hiding spaces, is this possible?

yes you can keep a sailfin pim to a 240 gallon tank, since they max out at 24 inches. but Gymnothorax polyuranodon can reach up to lenghts of 3 to 4 feet, so this size tank would be small, especially since you are adding tankmates with it.

welcome to MFK

Its been repeated many times over the years here that the leiarius cats have special requirements concerning their long whiskers which span fully twice their body length. It seems that when they mature they can easily become uncomfortable and skittish in any tank where their whiskers can contact both sides of the tank. Its for this reason that large catfish keepers will frequently recommend a much larger than typical enclosure for these cats, i think 8'x4' footprint would be adequate for a long term resident.

I dont believe the sailfin is any less robust than the marbled variety. There have been several examples of each well over the quoted 24" here on MFK over the years.

what would be possible tank mates if with a sailfin pim in a 240? I also planned to have some hardscape in the tank with and i hope that wouldn't have any issues with the fish

Most resources say more catfish like Irwin's Soldier Cats, Black Doradids, etc. You could probably do large, aggressive cichlids. Idk. Other people could provide better info.

You couldn't fit an arowana long term. Pbass I don't know about....others can chime in on that. Tiger eels won't work because they are brackish (assuming the catfish you want is freshwater).
