not another one of these threads!!!!!!!!!!! i compared the MSDS sheets before. here's what you need to know:

- "solar salt cyrstals" is what you want, this is PURE salt, nothing else added. 40lb bag for about $4-5 at any lowes, home depot, walmart, and even grocery stores. this is used for water softeners

- avoid the "system saver pellets". these pellets have some kind of additive for the water softener system, cant remember what it does.

- "aquarium salt" is the same damn thing as the solar salt crystals. if it gives you the warm n fuzzies to get ripped a new one while buying "aquarium salt" in a cute container, go right ahead. but remember, you can get the same thing at 10 cents per pound if you buy it in bulk. API is making a killing of you guys that cant read the labels

Its not pellets!

I was trying to inform some people that using the salt that is in pellet form might not be a good idea.

You can buy like 25-50lb bags of water softener salt at hardware stores or home depot for like $5-$10. Pretty sure its the same stuff as aquarium salt sodium chloride, even though it comes in pellets some times.

From the info jcardona1 was able to find, backs my comment about not using the salt that is in pellet form.

Does anyone buy salt in bulk? Regular non iodized salt (sodium chloride).
Where do you get it and in what quantity?

Dude, the salt is fine. If the per gallon ratio is hard to determine because of the grain size then put it in a blender. Your saving money.

It was my mistake for mentioning the pellets. I wasn't sure if it was the same as the rock salt in the first place and shouldn't have mentioned it anyways.

I'm still using my aquarium salt.

A LFS was going out of business and we picked up about 200 pounds of salt for 12 bucks. Right place at the right time. Otherwise get the stuff from lowes.

Not a problem.

Even one of the techs told me not to use the pellets for my water softner. He said the additives/binding agent used to hold the pellets together isn't good for the water softner.
