Saltwater fish converted to freshwater?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
neoprodigy neoprodigy once posted photos of a freshwater and saltwater cohabitation that he saw at a convention. Maybe clownfish and guppies? I can't recall. The vendor sold a special additive that make this "possible". You'll have to search through threads that are several years old, but maybe you can find the posts?

I bet the additive was marine salt. Lol

You saw my "possible"...
They were cohabed during the convention. Not sure about longevity.

Most fish can acclimate and migrate to brackish waters for weeks or months at a time

According to wiki, Barramundi are euryphaline (like the molly) so fit somewhere in group 3 or 5. They apparently can adapt because during their life cycle they intentionally swim into estuaries (brackish / sea water) where they spawn. Reportedly some spend their entire life in sea water where they have been cutoff from freshwater.

I've heard that people can adapt mollies to 100% sea water where they can survive just fine.
In Iowa there is a baramundi hatchery that sells to restaurants. Doubt if the breeding stock has ever heard of salt

Some fish are adaptable or dont care. Bull sharks can go either fresh or salt given the fact that they can store salt internally

Dont know. Probably can but they usually head back to sea every once in a while. Maybe it lasts extremely long seeing that they have been found super far upriver

Largest bull shark ever caught was 13 1/2 feet long and was caught in fresh water. I don't think it has to do with them storing salt internally but rather that they have advanced organs that can adapt to how they regulate salt in their bodies. I believe they can, and sometimes do, spend their entire lives in fresh water.
