Dont lungfish do this? They stay/survive out of water using the same technique. I saw a documentary once, that showed a species of Lungfish (cant remember), that could survive up to 4 years out of water!

The fish secretes some kinda mucous that keeps it moist.

That's really neat, I should go lookin in the mangroves down here for some. Wonder how hard they'd be to keep? Kinda cool lookin little fish.
